FAQ - Stone vs.
Strop: A strop is for daily use to keep a straight razor edge shave ready. A
hone is for occasional use when the edge becomes to dull for normal
stropping. However, strops can be used with a paste that acts as an abrasive
and can substitute for a honing stone in many circumstances. There are many
options for keeping a straight razor edge sharp and shave ready. Keep it
simple and only use the minimum necessary to keep your razor/s edge in good
condition. There is no right, or one size fits all, way to maintain an edge
- so experiment to see what works best for you.

Flattening Stone.
This silicon carbide stone has a course grit with diagonal grooves that keep
particles from building up on the surface. Use to keep all water stones
truly flat because over time honing can cause the water stone's surface to
wear unevenly. Rub water stone over the flattening stone for best results.

Prep stone
creates a slurry for cutting and polishing. While the use of a prep stone is
not mandatory, it speeds up the honing process. Gently rub the prep stone on
a wet water stone to create a slight slurry before starting to hone. 3/4" x
3/4" x 3" aluminum oxide stone is also known as a synthetic Nagura stone.
